Etymology of Imperial Slacks used the social documents and the immaterial substance of the Imperial Slacks Collective to imagine a living archive of a group of artists. The project began by creating an online portal that all the participating artists could contribute to. This archive included videos of performances, parties and openings, eviction letters, t-shirt graphics, performance avatars, injokes and in addition to the gallery exhibition documentations. The resulting work remapping this collective material as a catalyst for new installation and the development of new work. The work attempted to make visible the liminal space between art and life by recoding social histories.
Etymology of Imperial Slacks was developed for Cosmic Love Wonder Lust: The Imperial Slacks Project, co-curated by Nicholas Tsoutas, SCA, Zelda Stedman SCA and Michael Dagostino, Campbelltown Arts Centre Director. The exhibition reconnected 15 artists known as ‘The Slackers' who formed the Imperial Slacks Project in Surry Hills, Sydney between 1999 and 2002.
In addition the archival material returned to the overall exhibition design and also informed the publication.
