Hope Breathes The Museum

Hope Breathes the Museum is a commissioned performance for the Museum of Contemporary Art Sydney 25th Anniversary in 2016. Opening and closing the weekend celebration, the performance acted as a way to breathe in the past and exhale the future by using beat boxing vocal techniques. The work was performed by the international female acclaimed beat boxer Hope Haami.

Haamis vocal techniques were deconstructed by using forward and reverse play in connection to ascending and descending the entrance stairs of the MCA. The performer’s body acted as a machine that swept the Museum’s space from the past to the future. The costume referenced Janus the Roman god of time whose double-headed body symbolises transitions and rites of passage from the past to the future.
